LONG TERM DISABILITY POLICY
As with life insurance, a disability insurance policy is there to guard against future loss of earnings due to circumstances beyond your control and is arguably every bit as important. Major sickness or injury is something that many people may believe they are prepared for, but what they are frequently not ready for, and may not even have considered, is the resulting lack of wages that could continue well beyond the initial illness or injury should the resulting consequences - such as disability - turn out to be long rather than short term. A long term disability policy is your insurance against such a possibility. There are many different kinds of such disability policies. Some employers even offer to them to their employees on their own, but employees should take care not to rely on them too blindly, as they may turn out to not offer enough coverage should the worst actually take place. Such policies also leave the resultant benefits open to being taxed, while individual policies avoid this potential loss. A workers compensation policy also would not provide insurance coverage if the disability arose as a result of injury or illness that was not in some way caused by or linked to the job you are working in. However, taking out personal disability coverage is also usually a lot more expensive than that offered by employers; careful study of your options and the policy is therefore advised in each and every individual case. Most people, providing they have not been already subjected to illnesses that could cause disability during the past ten years, should have no trouble being able to find themselves a suitable long term disability policy. Short term disability policies are available, which covers people in the event of an illness or injury that might leave them unable to perform work for around six months. For an illness or injury that could leave you incapacitated and unable to find income for a year, if not more, a long term policy is therefore an essential requirement. Indeed, many experts believe that such a long term policy is perhaps the most important insurance coverage a person can have. |
